Obituary for Larry Frederick Coble

Larry Frederick Coble
Larry Frederick Coble,72, a resident of Wappingers Falls, NY, died peacefully and with dignity at the Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY, on September 18, 2018.

He was the loving husband of Gail McCarthy-Coble (Wappingers Falls,NY), who survives at home; and the son of Gladys Marie Coble (Greencastle, PA), who survives at home. Both his father, Richard Frederick Coble, and his sister, Linda Marie Noisom, predeceased him.

Larry was born on December 22, 1945, in Mineola, NY. His family moved to Fairfax, Virginia when Larry was 6 months old, where he attended Fairview Elementary School, Fairfax High School for his Freshman year, and graduated from W.T. Woodson High School in 1964. Larry was a Boy Scout Troop Leader and played on the Woodson High School Football Team as a Wide Receiver. He was a member of the Track Team and he participated in Woodson’s Distributive Education Program by working as a cashier at the local Chevrolet Dealership.

Larry attended Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1966 with a B.S. in Governmental Administration. It was during that time that Larry was first considered for recruitment by the U.S. Federal Government as a CIA Contractor.

In March 1967, Larry moved to Burlington, Vermont, where he joined the Burlington Police Department as a Police Officer. At the same time, he became a trained EMT and Fire Fighter with the Colchester Vermont Fire Department. In 1968, the Police Department granted Larry a Leave of Absence to provide his professional services to the Federal Government as a CIA Contractor, sending him to the Vietnam War.

In December 1969, Larry left the Police Department to begin what would be a 30-year career with IBM. He was hired at IBM Burlington in Essex Junction, Vermont, as a Security Officer and was promoted through the ranks, achieving the positions of Emergency Control Technician, Department Technician, Security Analyst, and Security Manager. Larry also performed other security services, including Crisis Management and Investigations, and provided Body Guard Protection for President Richard M. Nixon, and for other well-known politicians and entertainment figures.

In 1980, IBM granted Larry a Leave of Absence to again provide his professional Services to the Federal Government as a CIA Contractor to assist with the Iran Hostage Crisis.

In 1981, Larry was promoted to IBM Division Security Management and he transferred to IBM’s Headquarters location at its East Fishkill Facility in Hopewell Junction, NY. Larry was then promoted to IBM East Fishkill Site Security Manager, a position he held until the early 1990’s when he returned to Division Security Management. Larry was inducted into the IBM Quarter Century Club in 1994 and he retired in 1999 after 30 years of service with the Company.

On April 21, 1995, Larry married his best friend and the love of his life, Gail McCarthy-Coble. The phrase “Soul Mates” does not begin to capture the relationship these two people had together. Theirs was an enduring love right to the very end.

Larry was an Organ Donor with the New York State Donate Life Registry. He belonged to the Wounded Warrior Project Advance Guard Program and was a proud N.R.A. Life Member and Benefactor. He was an avid gun collector and a former Federal and NYS Firearms Dealer. He was a superb Marksman, skilled in precision shooting using projectile weapons. He was a self-taught carpenter and built his own “cabin in the woods” in Vermont, and his own shooting shed and sophisticated tree stand. In addition to carpentry, Larry acquired excellent skills in plumbing and electricity and he could build and repair anything.

Larry was an amazing deer hunter and small-game hunter, all of which is proudly displayed on the cathedral-high Taxidermy wall in their home. He also enjoyed fishing and taking walks in the woods. He had a great knowledge of wildlife and birds, a pastime both he and his wife greatly enjoyed. Larry was a member of AARP. He was an avid reader, a dedicated diehard Red Skins Football fan, and a Civil War buff. He also had a great love for film and his extensive Bluray movie collection gave him much pleasure.

More than anything, Larry loved his wife and their home and the life they built together. He was a proud man of great intelligence. A quiet man with deep passionate feelings. He felt fulfilled and incredibly blessed with the life he led. He lived by the words in Frank Sinatra’s song “My Way.”

Sincere and heartfelt thanks go to the exceptional Boscobel Unit Manager, Nurses, CNA's and Staff at Wingate-Dutchess in Fishkill for the love, care, and dedication they showed Larry during his year-and-a-half long-term residency.

There will be no calling hours and the cremation service was private.
