Obituary for Margaret Thompson Atkinson

TARPON SPRINGS, FL – Margaret Thompson Atkinson, Florida resident since 2014, died peacefully at the Brookdale Senior Living Center in Tarpon Springs, FL on Sunday, June 10, 2018. She was 97.

Daughter of the late Henry B. and Maggie (Stephenson) Thompson, she was born in Lancaster, England on February 25, 1921. She served in the British Military Service during World War II.

In 1952, she married Robert W. Atkinson in Portchester. Margaret and Robert were longtime residents of Old Post Mall in Fishkill, having moved there from Beacon in the early 1970s. Robert predeceased her on February 13, 1989.

For many years, she worked for W.T. Grant Department Store in Beacon. Following her retirement, she worked for a jeweler in Beacon and also spent many years as a volunteer for Nifty Thrifty in Fishkill. In addition to her volunteer work, Margaret was a busy and talented knitter, crocheter, and did a variety of needle work that her family and friends are proud to have.

She is survived by two sisters: Dorothy Butterworth and Marina Smith, both in England; several nephews and nieces along with their families: Michael Smith & wife Karen of Cary, NC, Andrew Smith & wife Sally of England, Christine Hyde & husband Graham of England, Tracy Platten & husband David of England, David Butterworth & wife Francis of England, and Margaret Brooks & husband Bernard Ogden of England; her brother-in-law, Donald Atkinson & wife Phyllis of Tarpon Springs, FL; and many other loving relatives & friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret was also predeceased by two siblings: Bessie Thompson and Henry Thompson.

A graveside service followed by interment will be offered at Saturday at 12:30 pm at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice, particularly if it benefits children.
