Elizabeth Catherine Browne (Gavin)
FISHKILL – Elizabeth Catherine Browne, a Dutchess County resident since 1965 and formerly of the Bronx and Manhattan, died peacefully at the age of 100 on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
Born in New York City on December 12, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Gavin of County Mayo, Ireland. One of five siblings, she was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters – Fr. Michael Gavin, CSC, Anthony Gavin, Mae Gavin, and Dolores Gavin.
Elizabeth was a graduate of James Monroe High School in the Bronx. She was a parishioner of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill and formerly of St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction. She enjoyed family activities and traveling.
On December 23, 1939, she married William Browne at St. Raymond’s Roman Catholic Church in the Bronx. They were married for 48 years until William predeceased her in 1987.
Elizabeth is survived by five children: Bonnie Browne & her husband Norm Ballard of Milford, CT, Dorothy Hourihan & her husband Robert of Hopewell Junction, Bill Browne & his wife Geri of Rhinebeck, Kathleen Rider & her husband Dave of Hyde Park, and Robert Browne of Appleton, ME; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives & friends.
In addition to her husband, parents, and siblings, she was also predeceased by an infant son, Vincent Browne, in 1943.
Calling hours will be held from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10th at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11th at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill. Interment will follow at St. Denis Cemetery in Hopewell Junction.
