Obituary for Lewis J. Rompala

WAPPINGERS FALLS - Lewis J. Rompala, 90, an area resident since 1964 and formerly of Clark Summit, PA, died peacefully at his home on January 13, 2018.

Born in Alden Station, PA on August 14, 1927, he was one of ten children of Louis and Sophie (Wengrzyn) Rompala. On October 9, 1954 in Tunkhannock, PA, he married Anna M. Tomolonis who survives at home. He had been employed as a Chip Research and Development Technician with IBM in East Fishkill. He also worked for the Town of Wappinger Recreation Department.

Lewis proudly served our country in the US Army. He was a member of the Manny Bacon Post #1758, American Legion and the Marist Red Fox Club. He volunteered over 5,000 hours at Castle Point VAMC, driving veterans and as a wheelchair escort. He was also proud to have donated over 115 pints of blood in his lifetime.

Lewis was an avid reader, enjoying history and biographies, and he amassed a large collection of books. Lewis and Ann visited many of our National Parks and Battlefields, and enjoyed traveling internationally. They also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, and helped Jimmy Carter build 30 homes on an Indian Reservation in a week in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing and dancing the Polka.

In addition to his wife, Lewis is survived by his children, Lewis J. Rompala and wife Lisa of Spicewood, TX, Walter J. Rompala of Hopewell Junction, Frank Rompala of Fishkill, and Susan Piro of Wappingers Falls; his grandchildren, Shannon, John, Nicholas, Alex, Amanda, and Jeremy; his sister, Frances Slovak; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 11am-12pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, followed by a service at 12pm. Entombment will be in Fishkill Rural Cemetery with military honors.
