Obituary for James K. Firth

James K. Firth
After a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, James (Jim) Firth passed away on Saturday, June 17th. Jim was born in San Francisco, CA to Madeleine (Jacobs) and Robert Firth. He spent most of his life in San Francisco, he was proud of his beautiful city and helped to make it a better place. He and his wife Cornelia moved to Grass Valley CA in 2008, and recently moved to Beacon NY to be close to his family during the course of his illness and treatment.

Jim was a loving husband, a nurturing father and grandfather, a devoted son and a dedicated brother. He met his wife Cornelia at City College of San Francisco in 1966, and they remained devoted to each other for more than 50 years, seeing each other through the joys and challenges of raising a family. Jim and Cornelia brought their daughter Kristine and son Eric into the world, and loved and supported them. Jim became a grandfather to Kristine and husband Andrey’s sons Eli and Oliver. He cooked with them, played chess with them, and joked with them. He will be missed by all.

Jim worked at Macy’s for a time but then became a Union Rep and Business agent for SEIU. He negotiated many contracts and advocated for the rights of his members. He was the President of PLAN, a community organization in his beloved Potrero Hill, SF and President of the Democratic Club. When he moved to Grass Valley he quickly became the chair for the Nevada County Democrats. He worked tirelessly to ensure that America continues to become the fair and welcoming country that he knew it could be. Illness forced Jim to dial back his political activism, but he kept writing letters to the editor as long as he could and attended Democratic meetings in his new home of Beacon, New York.

Jim was an intrepid cook and enjoyed good meals. He loved to try new recipes and would make sure any guest in his home ate well. It was a great comfort to his family that he was able to enjoy food up until the last days of his life, and they will think of him every time they try a new restaurant.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held in the near future in Grass Valley, CA.
