Obituary for Hedwig "Heidi" Martin (Deitigsmann)

Hedwig "Heidi"  Martin (Deitigsmann)
Hedwig Martin, known to family and friends as “Heidi”, a resident of Fishkill for 18 years and formerly of Yonkers, NY, died peacefully at Fishkill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing (Elant at Fishkill) on May 6, 2017 after a brief illness. She was 93 years old.

Daughter of the late Leonhard and Marei Deitigsmann, she was born in Nitzenhausen, Germany on June 19, 1923. She grew up on the family dairy and pig farm where her love of all animals began and remained with her throughout her life time. She always enjoyed greeting and petting any animal she encountered. During her years at Elant, she was active in the residence bell choir and German Club.

She entered the United States in New York City on August 24, 1958. On October 4, 1958, she married her childhood classmate Frederick Martin at Grace Lutheran Church in Bronx, NY. Frederick predeceased her on September 1, 1997.

Hedwig is survived by her son Michael Martin and her daughter-in-law Grace Martin of Wappingers Falls, NY. Hedwig is also survived by her sister Ilse Bauknect (Albrect) of Stuttgart, Germany; sisters-in-law, Analeise Deitigsmann of Nitzenhausen, Germany, Josephine Martin of Cincinnati, OH, and Carol Martin of Beacon, NY; and several nieces and nephews in Germany and the United States.

Hedwig was also predeceased by her sister Maia Lober (Willie) of Vogelsberg, Germany; her brother, Gerhard Deitigsmann of Nitzenhausen, Germany; and brothers-in-law, Emil Martin of Cincinnati, OH, and Walter Martin of Beacon, NY.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from 4 to 7pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. Private burial will take place on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Putnam Valley, NY
