Condolence: Bin and I had probably met each other and lived together in Tsinghua University’s 7th dormitory as early as 1982. However, it took 11 thousand kilometers and 11 years for us to interact with each other, when he came to join my research group as a PhD student in Auburn University in 1993 – A funny bit of fate that I am more grateful for now than ever.

Bin was a tough guy! He would work on a problem and keep working on it until he either succeeded in solving it or had completely exhausted himself in the effort; but I never once saw him gave up.

Bin came to my group to work on one of my National Science Foundation projects based on an idea that I formulated when I myself was a PhD candidate at University of Cambridge -- that a stack of thin sheets of brittle material can be toughened by simply gluing them together with a soft glue.

So on a fine late spring afternoon, before I went to West Point Lake to do some fishing, I gave him a few pieces of glass and expected some results back soon.

The result indeed came back quickly, but it was not in favor of my theory. Bin told me that the strengthening effect I had hypothesized would be too insignificant to be measured in real life unless the thickness of the glass sheets was reduced down to micron meter level, about a tenth of the thickness of a human hair!

I was quite concerned about how we were going to get glass sheets that thin and how we could glue them together. So very encouragingly, but much less convincingly, I told Bin: “I am sure some solution will emerge,” and told him to keep working on it.

So Bin kept working on it, and a week turned into a month, which turned into a year, but he finally succeeded on finding those extremely thin glass sheets. In fact, he was able to produce sheets of varying thickness and convincingly demonstrated that there not only existed a strengthening effect, but he was also able to show the relationship between the strengthening effect and the thickness of the individual thin sheets, something far beyond my initial expectations!

Bin’s tenacity also impressed me outside of my laboratory. With his research work progressed satisfactorily, he started venturing into other areas of interest. He soon discovered my favorite fishing hole, Lake West Point. I showed him the corner of the lake with hundreds of little fish and how I could feed them with worms but never catch them. They seemed to possess some special intelligence, I told Bin. They nibbled at the worm but would not commit to bite the whole hook.

A few months later Bin came to my office. After closing the door behind him he pulled out a bag of smelly little fish with a grin from ear to ear:

“Dr. Young, I finally figured out how!”

And that’s how it was with Bin – through a combination of uncommon intelligence, and even rarer determination and toughness, he was always able to find a way – whether that was a way to catch some uncatchable fish, or to help his PhD advisor prove out a theory.

Bin, in our life we are all dealt our hand by Fate, and the hand is never a perfect one: some are too short, others are too tall; some too thin, others too fat. We do not have a choice of what fate gives us, but we have the choice of what to do with what we have. In the last leg of your journey, you showed us what choice you had made. You chose to make full use of every bit of opportunity to explore the journey of life. You gave us an example of how fully a life could be lived.

Bin, I will miss you. And when I think about you I think about how you never gave up and how you made great use of the precious time that fate gave you. In your new life, I am sure you will have a lot fun just as you had in this past one. When I come to visit, please don’t forget to take me fishing.

Condolence: I had worked with Bin for more than 2 years before I left IBM. He was a great friend and mentor. When we visited his home last year, he was so proud of his family and showed us the pictures he had taken, the new lens he bought and the CUPs his daughter had won. He looked so happy although we all knew the pain he was suffering. Looking at the pictures he uploaded to WeChat, I can not stop crying. Miss your smile, my friend.
